Kindergarten

Our full-time Kindergarten program runs from September to June and is designed to provide your child with an environment where learning is exciting, positive and encouraging. Through fun and engaging challenges, students are encouraged to explore the foundational skills of literacy and numeracy through individualized and project-based learning. Our classes are led by gifted Christian teachers who genuinely care and uphold strong Christian values.

Introductory Home Visits by Teachers

Due to the current health restrictions, introductory home visits will not be happening this year. Instead, students will have introductory visits to the school to see their classroom, meet their teacher and build a connection before the first day of Kindergarten.

This is the best kind of introduction. Our friendly Kindergarten teachers will connect with new families in the first week of September to arrange a home visit. Teachers will come visit your home and introduce themselves to the student and build a connection with them before they start at school. This also allows our teachers to better understand the families we are serving and their unique circumstances.

Strong Literacy Program

With a team of amazing teachers and staff, our school uses a “many eyes” approach to education. Partnering with our Learning Support Teacher, Dori Vinton, our Kindergarten teachers seek to teach each child at their level of readiness and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone to grow and develop a love for learning.

Early literacy programs begin in Preschool at Kelowna Christian School, and continue into our Kindergarten programs. Learning Centres host play experiences that facilitate all areas of development, as well as directed teaching in literacy, numeracy and fine motors.

Kristi Cooper, Director of Teaching & Learning, is also a wealth of knowledge and a strong asset to our education team at KCS. Kristi is passionate and dedicated to continue strengthening our education program with the new curriculum being implemented by the BC Ministry of Education. Holistic Program

KCS believes in an innovative and holistic approach to education. We offer high quality, education from Preschool through Grade 12 with intentional, interwoven progression. We work together with families to help each child grow academically, socially and spiritually. Core competencies of our Kindergarten program include: Communication, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Positive Identity, and Socially Responsible. It truly takes a village to raise a child and we feel privileged to join you on the journey. We love and care deeply for all our students!

Our Kindergarten program is a part of the larger community of KCS. Our Kindergarten students benefit from literacy, art and music specialists in our Elementary School. Our friendly Elementary Librarian, Jessie Davis, works with each of our students during weekly reading times. We have a wonderful and passionate Music & Arts Director with designated music and art rooms.

We have bright, colourful and engaging Kindergarten classrooms. Our Kindergarten students get to enjoy our Elementary gymnasium and big playground too!

CHAPEL

We have chapel every Wednesday from 8:45am – 9:15am. Parents are most welcome to join us at chapels! To ensure there are enough seats for students to sit with their class, a parent section is located at the back. We run a couple different chapels throughout the month. This year we focused on how each Bible story we learn about connects to God’s greater story. We also have class led chapels, where specific classes lead us in songs and teach us. Our community chapels focus intentionally on building school community between grades and classes. In community chapels, we have multiple class grades work together to showcase what they are learning in school and connect it to God’s story. COMMUNITY + CONNECTION

At KCS we believe that developing strong relationships among teachers, parents and students is vital and will ultimately shape their education. These relationships are formed by respect, love, positive examples, honesty, responsibility, guidance and forgiveness. All this is summed up by our "Me-Third" philosophy.

Community is foundational to our school. Teachers, staff, parents and students are intentional about creating and participating in activities and programs that focus on fostering relationships and service within our school, city and global community. We raise funds for projects, collect shoes for the needy, serve other students, and visit our friendly elders at Mountainview Residential Care Village. Learn more below. Our lovable Class Moms and Parents In Action committee play a huge role helping make real world connections for our students in our local and global community.

Relationship and mentorship is very important in our school. We seek to build community, not only with our peer group, but also with “big buddies” in other grades at the Elementary campus. We also pursue and value strong teacher-student and parent-teacher connections.

ME-THIRD PHILOSOPHY

We love to create opportunities to foster and develop loving, caring and Christian character in our students. Our Me-Third philosophy influences every aspect of our elementary school community. We teach and remind students to place everything under the umbrella of God first, others second and “Me-Third”. Through this approach, our students have grown to respect others, build honouring friendships and a love for serving our community. REACHING OUT TO OTHERS

All students are involved in at least three Me-Third opportunities throughout the year. We mix local and international projects with opportunities to contribute money, time and acts of service. On an international level, we partner and support Child of Mine, a children's home in India, through coordinating various fundraising events. As a school community, we also help and serve local organizations like The Salvation Army (food hampers) and Shoe Bank Canada. Finally, we reach out to others through individual class Me-Third projects too. These are based on their passions, interests or personal connection to a cause. In addition, every Thursday a group of students walk with their teacher and parent volunteers to visit their “senior buddies” at Mountainview Residential Care Village on KLO Road. With their senior buddies, students may sing songs, present projects they have been working on, do crafts, interview residents or plant a garden. It is a real serving experience that sometimes takes students out of their comfort zone in serving others who may not be able to respond.
